The Bison rut occurs near the end of July in Yellowstone Park's Lamar Valley. During this time, male bison compete for mates and dominance. The older bulls make their presence known by bellowing loudly and ripping up sagebrush to show their strength. This spectacle can result in unique sights like a bison wearing a sagebrush war bonnet.
